Visitation is a member church of the Kansas City Communities Creating Opportunity (CCO) organization. Kansas City CCO is a federation of 100 faith-based congregations throughout the city. CCO focuses on improving living conditions in our community. Using community organizing, CCO and its member congregations work to address concerns and resolve concerns in their neighborhoods.
Our local organizing community worked on issues including housing, payday loans, healthcare and the Brookside Business District. For the past decade, our Visitation CCO team has focused on the issue of public education in Kansas City. They have worked with parent groups at Border Star Elementary School and the District Advisory Committee, hosted school board candidate forums, facilitated a public meeting with KCMO Superintendent Dr. Covington and served on committees for the district's long-range plan.
Governor Jay Nixon announced on June 26 that he will veto CCS/SCS/HCS/HB42. Nixon's decision amid the support of surrounding districts in St. Louis prevents statewide changes that addressed issues other than student transfers. The Kansas City School Board is in the process of selecting a superintendent. (See link on the right to follow that process.) The acquisition of full accreditation appears to be on target. Publication of statewide scores is expected in October. Repurposing of empty buildings continues in conjunction with community input.
In the past few years we have witnessed the descent into and recovery from loss of accreditation, the improvement of financial management (3 years of clean audits) to an A+ rating, the defeat of several attempts to impose state control of the district, and the persistent growth of student achievement. We are excited by the interest in Early Childhood Education and believe the support of young children is an incredibly vital piece of public education. Just as the school district is accountable to the community, the community is responsible for the school district.
Visitatino CCO envisions a city that gives high priority to quality public education and works together to meet that end for all children.
Visitation CCO is a Catholic faith community that connects to the larger community by building relationships, sharing research, encouraging communication, advocating for high quality public education from early childhood through high school, seeking accountability from all public schools and the community.
